Architecture from the inside – Barbara Gryka. In conversation with Zofia Rydet 🏠

In her work “Architecture from Within,” Barbara Gryka engages in a dialogue with Zofia Rydet’s “Sociological Record.” Like the renowned photographer from Gliwice (Poland), Gryka enters the private spheres of people she does not know. A key concern for both artists is the reflection on the relationship between humans and the spaces they inhabit—the contemplation of the process of “making a home” in one’s surroundings, shaping it both consciously and intuitively.

The works of Zofia Rydet and Barbara Gryka also provoke the question of the extent to which the places we live in reflect our tastes, character, and sometimes—even seemingly strange—preferences. For Zofia Rydet, who grappled with a sense of uprootedness, the theme of safe, familiar spaces, where successive years of inhabitation accumulate like geological layers, was highly significant. Rydet sought genuine “authenticity” in rural cottages, untouched—she believed—by interior design catalogues and the mass production of standardised objects.

Barbara Gryka responds to Rydet, demonstrating that grassroots human creativity can also flourish in top-down planned modernist housing estates. The result of her visits is over three hundred photographs, a collection of keepsakes and gifts received from the people she visited, and a film in which the artist recounts her experiences recorded spontaneously on the spot.
