Dab, Slash, Glide 🍒
2024
The point of departure for this undertaking, which was part of the exhibition “Krzycz, siostro, krzycz” (“Shout, sister, shout”), consisted of a workshop carried out with girls from a reformatory in RadzionkĂłw near Bytom. The artist’s main goal was to gather stories from girls representing the young generation, who found themselves in a situation of confinement.
Can I hope to live a normal life after getting out of here?
The artist asked the girls to create a model of their dream house – there were no limitations, so they could fully express themselves.
Together with Patryk Dariusz Gacki, after analysing the houses, they created a choreography to show the moment of emancipation and the girls’ power. The point of departure for their joint work was the method of the choreographer and dancer, Rudolf Laban, together with his “dab, slash, glide”. The movements performed by the girls end with shaking off, liberating. The choreography resulted in a video, where the voice of Agata Cukierska, the exhibition curator, can be heard in the background, describing a perfect day. It suggest a longing after a normal life. The video was presented in the form of projection cast through an installation made of lace fabric, inspired by Silesian lace. The laces were made by the artist’s mother, Beata MĹ‚ynarczyk- Gryka. They constitute a symbolic representation of weaving problems, gestures, evoking the idea of entanglement or enmeshment.
